Elko County Nevada

Elko County is in northeastern corner of Nevada, and borders Idaho on the north and Utah on the east. About 50,000 people call Elko County home. The county is mountainous, including the Independence, Ruby, and Pequop ranges, with occasional valleys and a high plateau in the northwest, and contains two large segments of Humboldt National Forest (north and centre). The county was created in 1869. The county seat is Elko, site of the annual Basque Festival which celebrates the immigrant sheepherders of the county.

Elko is where Nevada’s real cowboys—or in Nevada, buckaroos—work and play, and the Western spirit lives on. Elko’s authenticity has earned the town its spot as one of the Top True Western Towns in the United States.

Lamoille Canyon

Lamoille Canyon is the largest valley in the Ruby Mountains, located in the central portion of Elko County in the northeastern section of the state of Nevada, in the western United States. Approximately 12 miles in length, it was extensively sculpted by glaciers in previous ice ages. Lamoille Canyon begins at Liberty Peak at an elevation of 11,032 ft. It quickly descends to a glacial basin now occupied by Lamoille Lake.
A nearby granite shelf contains the picturesque Dollar Lakes. Further down the canyon is a large stand of Whitebark pine and the Road’s End Trailhead, the high point of Lamoille Canyon Road, which is a National Forest Scenic Byway. This is also the northern terminus of the 38-mile Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail, and the start of the much shorter trail to Island Lake. Road’s End is where Lamoille Canyon begins a sweeping turn around the flanks of Thomas Peak, 11,325 ft. The glaciers have deeply carved the canyon, leaving a U-shaped cross section and, high on the side of Thomas Peak, four hanging valleys. The road then passes the Terraces Picnic Area and Verdi Peak. A nearby nature trail exhibits the diverse plant life in the canyon bottom.

Angel Lake

Angel Lake is a glacial tarn in the northern part of the East Humboldt Range, in central Elko County in the northeastern part of the state of Nevada. It has an elevation of 8378 feet and an area of approximately 13 acres, and a depth of up to 29 feet. A 12-mile scenic highway, State Route 231, climbs from Interstate 80’s exit 351 in Wells to the eastern shore of the lake. Located at the base of a steep cirque, the lake is surrounded by high cliffs. Greys Peak rises high to the west, and to the south is a group of pinnacles known as Chimney Rock. Far below and to the east lies Clover Valley and the community of Wells.
Angel Lake is one of the most popular recreation sites in the area. On its shore is a 26-site campground, and an 11-site picnic area. The lake itself is available for fishing and non-motorized rafts. A paved trailhead provides access for routes to nearby Smith Lake and to the more distant Greys Lake. Down the access road can be found a trailhead for Winchell Lake, and the Angel Creek Campground. The lake was named after Warren M. Angel, an early rancher in nearby Clover Valley.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Elko County and northwestern White Pine County in the northeastern section of the state of Nevada in the western United States. Established in 1938, it encompasses 37,632 acres of wetlands in Ruby Valley, just east of the Ruby Mountains and just south of Harrison Pass. It is 16 miles long, up to 3 miles in width, and lies at an elevation of 6,000 feet.
Once the bed of a 200-foot deep lake, it is now a network of spring-fed marshes and shallow ponds serving as a habitat for hundreds of species of native and migratory birds and mammals. The Refuge is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A Visitor’s Center and auto-tour route allow for discreet viewing of waterfowl.

Wild Horse Reservoir State Recreation Area

Wild Horse State Recreation Area is a public recreation area located on the northeast shore of Wild Horse Reservoir, approximately 67 miles north of Elko, Nevada. The 120-acre park is a popular destination for fishing, and especially ice fishing, on the reservoir, which was created in 1937 and enlarged to cover 2,830 acres with the creation of a new dam in 1969. In addition to year-round fishing, the park offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, boating, ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing

South Fork State Recreation Area is a state park unit of the state of Nevada covering nearly four thousand acres, located five miles due south of Elko. The park comprises the 1,650-acre South Fork Reservoir and surrounding marsh, meadowlands, and hills.
