Rio Grande County covers 913 square miles and is considered the “Gateway to the San Juans.” The population was 11,982 in 2010, and the county seat is Del Norte. The county is named for the Rio Grande (“Big River”), which flows through it.

Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge is a United States National Wildlife Refuge located in southern Colorado. The refuge is located in the San Luis Valley south of the town of Monte Vista, Colorado in southeastern Rio Grande County, Colorado, in the watershed of the Rio Grande. It was established in 1953 by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission to provide a habitat for wildlife, particularly waterfowl, in the San Luis Valley
Elwood Pass

Elwood Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.559m (11,676ft) above the sea level located in Rio Grande County, in southwestern Colorado, USA. There are a few water crossings along the way.
Nestled in the San Juan Mountains, within the Rio Grande National Forest, the road to the summit is unpaved. It’s called East Fork Road (FS 667). Starting from Highway 160, the road to the summit is 28.80km (17.9 miles) long. The first 8 miles starts out as a two lane graded gravel road where it leaves the highway and are pretty tame (suitable for most passenger vehicles). Then the next 10 miles are a lot of climbing and a lot of loose big rocks (4×4 high clearance vehicles are recommended as there are multiple water crossings).
Peacock Meadows Riverside RV Park and Campground

Peacock Meadows offers Rocky Mountain nature in all it’s splendor. They have more than 7 acres of nature trails, wetlands and even a large active beaver pond. The beaver pond is the home for a large beaver family, muskrats, deer, multiple fish species and is an annual breeding habitat for ducks and geese. One naturalist recently counted more than 25 species of birds in less than an hour – including a beautiful pair of bald eagles who frequents our park. If you’re a nature lover, our park has a lot to offer.

Surrounded by national forests, they offer a quality getaway for families, couples, retirees, and professionals looking for an escape. Fish in the private trout pond or on the the Rio Grande River – without ever leaving our park. With nearby restaurants, golfing, hiking, river rafting, mountain biking, snow sports and hundreds of miles of OHV, 4 wheel and snow mobile trails close by, Peacock Meadows is a great place to spend your summer.
Bennett Peak

Bennett Peak is a high and prominent mountain summit in the San Juan Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains System, in southwestern Colorado. The 13,209-foot thirteener is located in Rio Grande National Forest, 14.2 miles south-southwest of the Town of Del Norte in Rio Grande County. Bennett Peak is the highest point in Rio Grande County.
Poage Lake

Visitors looking for an off-the-beaten path, but accessible lake, should consider Poage Lake. Located west of South Fork, Poage Lake and the surrounding area are great for wildlife viewing, outdoor adventure, nature photography, fishing and family outings. The lake is accessible via the unpaved Beaver Creek Road in the Rio Grande National Forest. From the town of South Fork, travel one mile west on US Hwy 160 then turn left and travel south on Beaver Creek Road 360 for 15 miles until arriving at a dirt parking area. Park here and enjoy the .25 mile walk to the lake shore.
The Poage Lake Fishing site consists of a large parking area, a short trail to the lake, and the lake itself, a small impoundment that is regularly stocked in summer with Cutthroat Trout. ky
Million Reservoir

Million Reservoir is a small impoundment near South Fork. It is regularly stocked with catchable Rainbow Trout during the summer providing good convenient fishing close to town. It consists of a parking lot, restroom, trail to and around the shore.
Beaver Creek Reservoir

Covering 102 acres of Rio Grande County, Colorado, the Beaver Creek Reservoir State Wildlife Area is a beautiful outdoor destination that is popular for fishing, boating, picnicking, and camping. All visitors aged 18 years and older are required to carry a valid state hunting or fishing license when visiting the Beaver Creek Reservoir SWA, or any Colorado state wildlife area.
As the name implies, the Beaver Creek SWA is centered around the Beaver Creek Reservoir, which holds a maximum of 4,400 acre-feet of water and sits at approximately 8400 feet in elevation above sea level. There are no hiking trails, but accessing the water on the sandy beaches and rocky shores.
