Park County Colorado

Gorgeous Park County Views

Unlike many surrounding counties, most of Park County has changed very little over the years. The wide open ranchland still hosts cattle, bison, elk, deer, and antelope, and the forests are home to bears, mountain lions, foxes, and lynx.

Residents of Park County have the privilege of living among the breathtaking scenery and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities that are a part of this area. Many of the historic buildings, mining camps, towns, ranches, and natural wonders are available for the visitor to enjoy.

Kenosha Pass

Kenosha Pass, elevation 10,000 ft, is a high mountain pass located in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado in the United States. The pass is located in the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver, Colorado, just northeast of the town of Fairplay, Colorado. Geologically, the pass is located atop a large granite batholith that forms the spine of the Front Range along the eastern side of South Park. It is traversed by US 285 between Jefferson and Grant, and provides a route between the valley of the North Fork South Platte River and the headwaters of the South Platte River in South Park. In addition to providing one of the principal access routes to South Park, the pass offers dramatic views of the surrounding Rockies, including the nearby peaks of Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt.

San Isabel National Forest

San Isabel National Forest is located in central Colorado. The forest contains 19 of the state’s 53 fourteeners, peaks over 14,000 feet high, including Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado. It is one of eleven national forests in the state of Colorado and contains the Sawatch Range, the Collegiate Peaks, and Sangre de Cristo Range. It has a total area of 1,120,233 acres spread out over parts of eleven counties in central Colorado. In descending order of land area it is located in Chaffee, Custer, Lake, Huerfano, Fremont, Pueblo, Saguache, Las Animas, Park, Costilla, and Summit counties. San Isabel National Forest is co-managed by the Forest Service together with Pike National Forest, Cimarron National Grassland, and Comanche National Grassland from offices in Pueblo. There are local ranger district offices located in Cañon City, Leadville, and Salida.

Spinney Mountain State Park

Spinney Mountain State Park is a Colorado state park located in South Park in Park County, Colorado, United States. The park centers on the Spinney Mountain Reservoir, which is popular with anglers. The reservoir and surrounding land is owned by the City of Aurora, Colorado, which uses the reservoir for municipal water storage. The park itself is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. At high water, the reservoir’s surface lies at 8,710 feet above sea level. It has a capacity of 53,651 acre feet.

Hoosier Pass

Hoosier Pass is a high mountain pass in central Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States. The name derives from Indiana, nicknamed the “Hoosier State,” which was the original home of many pioneers. The pass is located on the Continental Divide at the northern end of the Mosquito Range, in a gap between Mount Lincoln and Hoosier Ridge. It sits on the boundary between Park and Summit counties. The pass provides a route between the headwaters of the Blue River to the north and the headwaters of the South Platte River in South Park to the south. It is traversed by State Highway 9 between the towns of Breckenridge and Fairplay. The highway over the pass provides an alternative route from Denver to the ski areas near Breckenridge and Keystone. It is generally open all year round, is traversable by all vehicles in good weather, but is occasionally closed during winter storms. The road over the pass has a smooth approach on the south side but has several switchbacks on the north side with a grade of 8%. This pass is the highest point on the TransAmerica Trail, a transcontinental bicycle route that stretches from Yorktown, Virginia to Astoria, Oregon.
