Humboldt County Nevada

Humboldt County is located in the rugged high desert region of north-central Nevada, bordered on the north by Oregon and by neighboring Nevada counties to the west, south and east. The County’s 9,626 square miles offer some of the most varied, spectacular scenery in the State and a wide array of recreational opportunities.

The County’s economy is derived in large part from its main industries:

  • Agriculture and Agricultural Services
  • Mining
  • Tourism and Construction

The County is located in the rich gold mining center of the Western U.S and is the leading agricultural county in the State of Nevada with over 100,000 acres under cultivation. Tourism is also a large part of the County’s economic base due to the large numbers of visitors the gaming industry brings to the area and the draw of the beautiful wide open spaces, historical sites, and great hunting and fishing.

Knott Creek & Onion Valley Reservoirs

Love to Fish? This is the spot! Or grab your Canoe, Kayaks, or Paddlboards and enjoy the day with these views!

Check out this gorgeous spot to spend your day on the water fishing, paddle boarding, and taking in the fresh air. Tucked in the spectacular, ruggedly remote northwestern Nevada, Knott Creek Reservoir, Onion Valley and Blue Lake beckons outdoorsmen of all kinds thanks to its top notch fly fishing, crowdless hiking trails, untamed wildlife, and some of the best stargazing in the state, country, and world. Situated up beyond the Black Rock Desert and below the mighty Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, planning and adventure to Knott Creek Reservoir promises true alone-in-nature experiences in one of the most remote places in the Lower 48.

Nestled in the pristinely beautiful Pine Forest Mountains, Knott Creek Reservoir fishing is so great because the lake is managed and stocked by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Besides Knott Creek, a cluster of man-made reservoirs are found in this mountain range, including nearby Onion Valley Reservoir, Little Onion Reservoir, and Blue Lakes. Knott Creek covers 200+ surface acres with a maximum depth of 24 feet, which makes for ideal float tube fishing or fly fishing from the shoreline. The reservoir is stocked with a handful of different trout species, like rainbow trout, and two hybrid species including bowcut trout (rainbow and cutthroat hybrid), tiger trout (brown and brook hybrid.) Protected by its remoteness and proper management plan, the fish population here are sizable, growing up to 30 inches.

Black Rock Desert – High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area

Rye Patch State Recreation Area

WOW!

Open year-round, Rye Patch State Recreation Area is situated on a 22-mile long reservoir that has 72 miles of shoreline and 11,000 acres of water surface when full. Visitors enjoy camping, picnicking, swimming and water-skiing, and fisherman delight in the available white bass, catfish, black bass and walleye. Trails around and throughout the park make it easy to enjoy the waterfowl and wildlife that abound, including hawks, eagles, owls, great egrets, antelope, deer and fox. The park also serves as a popular base camp for off-road vehicles, ghost town exploration and gold prospecting.

Model T Casino

Try Your Luck at the Casino!

The Model T Casino is located in the heart of town with convenient access from I-80. Many years ago the Model T was a Ford dealership which probably accounts for the name! The town itself has evolved from a campground worksite in early 1830 to the historic, vibrant town you see today.

The Model T occupies prime real estate center strip in Winnemucca and is conveniently located with I-80 access. The charming Main Street facade transports you back in time, but that’s where the nostalgia ends! We provide a value driven experience for our guests by offering the newest slot machines, promotions, point multipliers, drawings, comps, and cash back in town.

Humboldt Museum

Spend the day at the museum….. FREE Admission, although donations are appreciated

Just above the site where thousands of wagon trains forded the Humboldt River on the long trek to California, sits the Humboldt Museum. The modern brick building mirrors its historic predecessor, a church turned museum. Also on site is the Greinstein Building– an 1880’s store, and the Richardson-Saunders House– an 1899 Eastlake style home.  Together, the buildings house the story of the community. Admission is FREE!

Remains from the Ice Age of 13,000 years ago, wonderful beaded and quilled regalia from an American Indian collection, vintage automobiles, keepsakes from Winnemucca’s “art Nouveau” period, and an early soda manufacturing scene are just some of the displays awaiting your visit.
Humboldt Museum campus comprises:

  • A large, two-story, red brick building housing the main collections
  • Three beautiful buildings moved to the site from elsewhere in town
  • The Humboldt River Viewing Plaza and plenty of parking
